Million Marker Product Guide

We've done the research so you don't have to! Each item has been scrutinized to ensure that the full list of ingredients is transparent to consumers and does not contain ingredients that are likely to be harmful.

Bath + Body

Clean up your cleaning routine by using products that use safer ingredients. The average person uses 12 personal care products daily, exposing them to about 112 unique chemicals, many of which are hormone disruptors. Set your body up for success with these safer choices!

Home

Transform your home into a place where coziness and clean air can finally coexist. Indoor air in homes can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air because everyday products like cleaners, fragrances, and other household items settle into furniture and accumulate in dust. Breathe in peace of mind (and cleaner air) with Million Marker Approved Home Products!

Kitchen

Serve up a healthy meal without a side dish of harmful chemicals. Cooking, storing, and consuming foods with plastic kitchen utensils and containers could release BPA, microplastics, and other unwanted toxicants into your food and drinks. Cook up something safe and delicious with Million Marker Approved Kitchen Products.

How We Score Products

We use science-backed, standardized scoring formulas that we developed to ensure every ingredient and product is evaluated consistently. Our scoring framework reflects the current scientific evidence around each ingredient and considers multiple types of potential health and environmental concerns. This allows scores to be meaningfully compared, even when products contain different numbers and types of ingredients.

  1. Step 1

    We combine the ingredient scores.

We combine the ingredient scores. We systematically assess all of the ingredients and their scores together to determine the level of concern for the product within each health category.

  2. Step 2

We account for multiple ingredients with similar concerns.

Our formula considers when multiple ingredients are linked to the same health concern, while accounting for the total number of ingredients in each product.

  3. Step 3

    We weigh different health concerns.

Some health concerns are given more weight than others based on their relative importance for vulnerable populations, with greater emphasis on serious health concerns such as developmental and reproductive effects. The same standardized weights are used for every product.

  4. Step 4

    We account for missing information.

When scientific information is unavailable for an ingredient or health category, our formula accounts for that missing information rather than assuming that no information means no concern.

  5. Step 5

    We calculate the final score.

All of this information is combined using our standardized formula to produce a score from 0–100, with higher scores indicating lower overall hazard concern.

These scores are applied as follows:

  • GO: ≥90
  • SLOW: 80–89.9
  • STOP: <80

These scores and categories take a precautionary approach to assessing relative health risk based on our calculations and the available science; they are not regulatory safety standards.
